I exchanged the following email with radio host Art Bell in October 2006 regarding comments made by readers to this weblog he believes are libelous.

I am the real Art Bell and your column and the responses to it have just been called to my attention.

I am contacting my Atty to determine what Legal action can be taken against those that have made actionable statements.

Even though I am a PUBLIC PERSON, I can assure you that much of what has been said rises above the bar of even what can be said of, or about a Public Person.

So you might be sure, I have not posted, nor was I even aware of this site until yesterday.

I'm not a big fan of Art Bell but I was shocked when I heard he remarried a filipino girl merely 100 days after Ramona died.

At first it didn't cross my mind that he may have murdered her until I listened to the audio of the show in which he announced his new marriage.

Not only did he marry Aiyin 100 days after they allegedly met. He then announced a few weeks later that he was moving to the Phillipines on April 29, 2006. On this clip he also tries to sell everything he owns to the listeners. It's truly disgusting.

Something is very fishy about this whole situation.

Listen to the audio and tell me what you think. He is soooooo giddy about his new love and actually claims that Romana would have wanted this. I think he is spitting on her memory.

I never cared for him and rarely listen to Coast to Coast. But now I will never listen to him again.

My weblog takes comments from the public -- more than 180,000 comments at last count.

Like any such forum on the Internet, it attracts some harsh and objectionable comments. If you will identify the specific comments you believe to be libelous, I'll review them.

I can understand your anger at some of the remarks you've quoted, but I don't review comments before they are posted. I'm eager to address your concerns, but if you're genuinely interested in pursuing this as a legal matter against me, we'll have to direct this to attorneys. I'd prefer to handle it directly and deal with the offending material, now that you have called my attention to it.

I would begin by taking the site down right away. I am a reasonable person but I can assure you as I tried in my email that what is contained in that thread goes way beyond the bar in even the case of a PUBLIC PERSON. I am shocked that as a media person you would not be well aware of this. Accusations of Child Molestation and Murder are actionable. Please review what you have allowed to be posted. What at the very least I expect is a written apology as well as the entire disgusting mess to be taken down right away.

Feel free to contact my attorney Wade Duchene, [ADDRESS_REMOVED]. I think you'll find that the law's pretty clear here. Under Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, "No provider or user of an interactive computer service shall be treated as the publisher or speaker of any information provided by another information content provider."

I'm not going to respond to any more email you send threatening litigation. Future correspondence of that kind should be sent to Duchene.

In my opinion, you would be better off focusing on the people who are making allegations about your personal life. I'm not one of them. I posted three news items about you -- none of which accused you of any wrongdoing -- and they drew 2,200 comments from the public. I have dealt with inappropriate comments when they were called to my attention.
