Eugene Volokh Considers Gay Sex

Yesterday, UCLA law professor Eugene Volokh thrust into the public debate a very long post of turgid prose which rams the argument down our throats that gays are converting people:

If you persuade someone to become a vegetarian, you can be said to have converted him to vegetarianism. He's still biologically an omnivore, but his practices are now different. Likewise, changing someone from (a) being an orientational bisexual who engages solely in heterosexual relationships to (b) someone who is an orientational bisexual who engages solely in homosexual relationships, or to (c) someone who is bisexual both by orientation and practice strikes me as quite rightly called a "conversion."

I am too juvenile a person not to snicker about Volokh's comparison between eating meat and sexuality.

Volokh, a former computer programmer who became a UCLA freshman at age 12 and clerked for Sandra Day O'Connor, is like the anti-John Roberts.

Unlike Roberts, who has been taking the fifth his entire adulthood, Volokh makes regular practice of sharing controversial opinions like this bizarre riff on homosexual conversion, which values a Humpty Dumpty-like fixity of the definition of the word "conversion" over the anti-gay persecution that results from the irrational fear of gay recruitment.

His contrarian outspokenness is a great trait for bloggers (or Internet trolls), but will forever disqualify him from consideration for the Supreme Court.

Allow me, for a moment, to treat this as if it is not total nonsense and ask a logical question: for this analogy to be appropriate one must, in fact, be able to persuade another to change his or her sexual practices in said manner. Two questions: 1. Who tries to get other people to change the gender of their sexual partners? 2. Who is successful at it? I cannot imagine what one could say or do that would make me consider trying to change the gender to which I am attracted, nor what steps I would have to take in order to make this change take place on an emotional and psychological level.

Now allow me to treat this as the drivel that it is and ask another question: why are people ignorant?

It may be nonsense that anyone attempts to convert anyone else to homosexuality on principle, but I suppose a gay person who wishes to get freaky with a straight person of the same gender might try to change the straight's mind about sexual preference if only for a little while. Why it seems like only yesterday that Rogers put his arm around my shoulders in the UNT newsroom and sang "Girl, you'll be a woman ... soon." Then he hypnotized me with his groovy punk hairdo, and ever since I've been a fan of Echo and the Bunnymen.

Interesting how Freudian the mossbacks' rhetoric is becoming as they have lost the culture war on homosexuality. Phrases such as "down their throats" and "in their faces" were read on the werb and published/spoken locally in St. Augustine after a federal judge ordered the Gay Pride Rainbow flags to fly in June 2005. (I did the research on St. Aug. area's 10,000 year Gay history, including 1566 murder on Governor Menendez's orders -- see June 2005 Collective Press)
The latest issue of The Collective Press carries two related articles and photos of local anti-Gay teens and adults picketing the St. Augustine Pride Day, some brandishing Confederate flags and holding up signs saying "honk of you're straight." Counter-picketers included a man who looked like "Kilgore was here," with his nose poking over a dry erase board, with changing hate slogans about who is going where and what disease is a cure for what minority group. One young'n was shirtless, grabbing his crotch. The youths grew bolder amidst bigoted, insouciant SAPD officers, wtih the bigots eventually picking fights, jumping people and marching single file through Cuna Street. In my own experience, there is no such thing as a 'conversion' and neither would I attempt one. I have however been surprised by at least one str8 guy who (after my 'confession' of being gay) actually insisted that I go home with him (which I obliged). Now he on the face of it is 100% str8 but clearly not - therefore it's not conversion but more of a case of 'helping the boys out at the weekend' as we say in Europe!
